About our Talent Search
The Old Dominion Barn Dance is searching for talent! The venerable country music show is in search of performers ages 5 to 35 to appear alongside some of the biggest stars in country music. Competition is open to country and bluegrass vocalists, vocal groups, musicians, dancers and comedians, and 5 winners will be chosen. Each will win the opportunity to perform on the Barn Dance and receive $500 for their performance. The contest will be held in front of a live audience at 7 PM on June 25th, 2022 at the Beacon Theater in Hopewell, VA.
This will be an excellent opportunity for talented young artists to advance their careers. Since 1946 the Old Dominion Barn Dance has been second only to the Grand Ole Opry, and a stepping stone for artists to perform on the Opry, from the Carter Family in the 40’s to most recently Tony Jackson in 2021. The legendary variety show features a cast of performers as well as the top names in traditional country and bluegrass music. Headliners have included Ricky Skaggs, Crystal Gayle, Marty Stuart, Lee Greenwood, Lorrie Morgan, Gene Watson, The Gatlin Brothers, Rhonda Vincent and many, many more. Winners of our competition will be appearing along with a talented cast and major country music stars.
Participants must enter a performance video for preliminary judging by March 1, 2022.
Old Dominion Barn Dance Talent Search, Rules and Regulations
The Old Dominion Barn Dance is sponsoring a Country and Bluegrass Music talent contest for vocalists, vocal groups, musicians, dancers and comedians between the ages of 5 and 35. Five winners will be chosen at a live competition show, with each receiving the opportunity to perform on a Barn Dance show and receive $500 for their performance. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Each act must submit this completed form below and send a performance video that is 3 minutes or less firstname.lastname@example.org. During the preliminary judging process, performers will be evaluated on their showmanship, appearance and core talent. They will be notified whether or not they have been chosen as a semi-finalist, and if so they will move on to perform in the live competition. Should they be chosen as a semi-finalist, entrants must agree to pay a $25 entry fee to perform in the competition. If a semi-finalist fails to appear and does not perform on the live competition show they agree to forfeit their $25 entry fee.
The live competition of the semi-finals and finals will be held at 7:00 PM on June 25th, 2022 at the Beacon Theatre in Hopewell, VA, the home of the Old Dominion Barn Dance. A production team including sound and light engineers and stage directors will be on hand along with backstage security. Dressing rooms and a green room stocked with bottled water will be available, where performers and their guests will be responsible for their own personal items. Each act is allowed one guest to accompany them backstage which will be strictly enforced. Other family members and friends can purchase tickets for $10 at the door and be seated in the auditorium.
Approximately 20 semi-finalists will compete by performing on stage in front of a live audience, with each act performing for 3 minutes or less to their own accompaniment or tracks which they must provide. They will be judged by a panel of five professionals and be evaluated on appearance, core talent, showmanship, stage presence and audience reaction. During intermission the judges’ votes will be tallied and 10 finalists will be chosen from the semi-finalists. Each of the 10 finalists will perform again on the second half of the show for 3 minutes or less to their own provided accompaniment or tracks. Judges will once again evaluate each performer on appearance, core talent, showmanship, stage presence and audience reaction. At the end of the competition the judges’ votes will be tallied, and the host will announce the 5 winners chosen from the 10 finalists.
